Advice

I just want to give a shout out for Ryerson and Annie's blog: - this will be their 3rd YRQ so they are the pros at this kind of thing.

There is so much that they already have sorted that we haven't even thought about that I'm feeling quite scared but I shall read each post at a time and copy, modify and plagiarise.  Just a public thank you to them for sharing their experience (although I'm not sure where they find time to do all that training)  I'm finding 3 hour sessions in the gym, 2, 2+hours paddling in the evenings and then a day trip at the weekends a push.

In the meantime, as it's a day for sharing, Dan came paddling with me at the weekend as Esther was away - he'd love to do the YRQ but it's tricky around work and he had a bad accident last year and is getting back to full strength.  Here is a blog of our trip  and a photo to keep you interested!  It Oxford that you can see in the distance as we were out on the Thames.

SoTP is an open canoe forum where Dan and I log quite a lot of our trip blogs and they have been ever so supportive of our YRQ attempt - following the purchase of the new boat etc.  If you are intersted in paddling its a great place to go for advice, ideas and friends to paddle with and they pop up everywhere.  I really must get a Quentin to go on our boat for the Yukon

  1. Thanks Sarah, we are only too glad to help anyone. Don't be afraid, take it one step at a time and you will do it! Just do your best in training and always push a bit more being careful to not get injured. The more you try, test and sort through before you leave for the race the easier it will be on the big river. You want as few surprises once the race starts as possible.

Remember, your brain will tell you to quit long before your body has to.

  2. carb loading, supplements & such scary stuff: reading about Claire Squires dying of heart attack in London Marathon after taking Jack3D - legally. its still on Amazon. then our little local free paper had a cyclist reviewing some hyped-up products from USN.
To Mummy this sort of stuff looks more scary than bears or white water. I know you'd never knowingly go for illegal substances/unfair advantages but nor would she.
Sorry, I don't go for Lance Armstrong argument that everyone else doing it, so it was only levelling playing field. Shame you don't like Kendal Mint Cake - it worked for Everest & Antarctic

  3. Oh, kendal mint cake, especially the chocolate covered one. I love that and had forgotten about it. That is one for the care package to Beez Kneez Hostel in Whitehorse! Thanks. Esther

  4. I think it's fair to say that the most performance enhancing stuff that I'll touch is Gatorade although I do have a box of whey powder.

  5. Sarah, we use this stuff you add to your water called "Nuun", don't know if you can get it where you are. Tablets that dissolve quickly in your water. Different flavours. They have all the "good" stuff that Gatorade has but none of the bad, like sugars.
